It 2 CONC seems that the mitral valve doesn't close good and the blood was being 2 CONC pushed back into the lungs. 2 CONT On Monday May 22 I checked into OSU Hosp. On the 23rd I had open 2 CONC heart surgery. Dr.P.David Myerowitz was the physician. He rebuilt the 2 CONC mitral valve. The operation description: Posterion Leaflet 2 CONC Quadringular Resection transposition of Posterior diodae to anterior 2 CONC Leaflet, an Edwards Prosthetic Ring replacement was installed. I was naturlized and became a 2 CONC citizen September 1928. 2 CONT These pages of Dad's Remembrances were given to me June 1995. 2 CONT Here I am almost 90 years old and trying to remember my history 2 CONC of the last 75 years. When I was six years old, an outstanding event 2 CONC was "Haley's Comet" in1910. It was visible in the sky in the middle of 2 CONC the day. Some Religious Sect predicted the end of the world and fled 2 CONC to the hills, to be scooped up by God to be saved. Here we are still 2 CONC here in 1995. 2 CONT Also remember the first "Zeppelin" over Berlin in 1911, next was 2 CONC the big disaster of the "Titanic in 1912. Brother Rudolf was signed up 2 CONC in Hamburg to be a "baker" on it, but he missed the ship in London and 2 CONC in Portsmouth, England. Darn good thing, he did, or I probably 2 CONC wouldn't be here in the USA. 2 CONT Next was the beginning of the World War 1 in 1914. We were taught 2 CONC in school as children. Germany was in the right to fight for more 2 CONC "Lebenraun," "Room to Live" in the world. Brother Earhart was drafted 2 CONC and was killed in action in France. Alfred was drafted toward the end 2 CONC of the war and received a bullet wound in the hand. Sister Anna fell 2 CONC in love with an officer in the army, who was killed in France. She 2 CONC brooded(fret, grieve, mope)so much over it, she lost her mind and had 2 CONC to be put in an institution. She passed away in 1933. 2 CONT I got permission to leave school when I was 13 years old to work 2 CONC in a defense factory, where they made shells for guns & mortars. I got 2 CONC fired from this job. The boss told me he'd see to it that I never got 2 CONC another job in defense work, I then worked in a print shop, till they 2 CONC told me to join the union, which I wouldn't do. After I worked in the 2 CONC print shop, I went to Mother's homestead all that summer. Grandfather 2 CONC died while I was there and I stayed there to Aunt Anna (Mother's 2 CONC sister) on the farm. When I came home in the fall, I took a job as an 2 CONC apprentice as a florist in a green house. But they worked me so hard, 2 CONC 5:00 a.m. till midnight. Then I took a job as a farm laborer all the 2 CONC summer of 1921. Then I took a job as delivery boy for a low voltage 2 CONC Electric Company, delivering goods all over Berlin on my back in 2 CONC backpacks, or pushcarts. Then I worked as laborer in an Electric 2 CONC company where they made fuses and other things. Then I went back to 2 CONC the previous company and worked in the shop as a laborer making 2 CONC storage batteries and flashlights cells. Worked there till I left for 2 CONC America. 2 CONT Also saw the "Revolution" when the war ended in the fall of 1918. 2 CONC The city of Berlin was under seize for 14 weeks. The Old Army fighting 2 CONC the New Army with big guns. The Police Headquarters was demolished. I 2 CONC had two close calls from a bullet and a non exploding shell. 2 CONT In the early spring of 1922 I wrote to Brother Rudolf that I 2 CONC would like to come to the USA. , As work around here was very scarce. 2 CONC He sent me the ticket and some money and I left home on the first of 2 CONC June 1922. Had to be in Hamburg for one week under quarantine before 2 CONC boarding the ship, to see if we were disease free. On the 10th of 2 CONC June, we left Hamburg for the USA. Arrived in New York on June 21. 2 CONC Went through Ellis Island and then by train to Portland, Maine. 2 CONC Arrived here in the morning of June 22, 1922. Rudolf found me work in 2 CONC a gravel pit, Maine Sand & Gravel Co. That summer. I screened mostly 2 CONT brick sand, by hand, loaded wagons with the sand. The power house in 2 CONC South Portland was under construction and they used lots of it. Late 2 CONC in the fall Rudolf started to have a house built on Bonnybank Road, 2 CONC South Portland next to Harry Bartsch"Grandpa's" place. When I got laid 2 CONC off in the pit, I helped around the house digging ditches for water 2 CONC and sewer. Also painted the house in side and out. We moved in, in the 2 CONC early spring 1923. That late fall and winter I also worked at Bancroft 2 CONC & Martin Rolling Mill in Ligonia, and at the Irving Lumber Co. On 2 CONC Commercial Street. I got hurt there, lost the end of little finger on 2 CONC the left hand. In the spring of 1923 I went back to the gravel pit for 2 CONC a job. I was hired on the spot as a ground man on a power shovel, and 2 CONC I was very helpful to the operator, by helping him grease the shovel 2 CONC morning and noon. He taught me to operate it. By late fall, he 2 CONC recommended me to the boss as an operator. It was an electric power 2 CONC shovel. After a while I started to operate steam shovels and gas 2 CONC engine shovels. Also, worked as general mechanic on gravel machinery. 2 CONT As I was living on Bonnybank Road next to Harry Bartsch, I got 2 CONC acquainted with Jennie Bartsch, On June 30, 1925 we got married in the 2 CONC home of her Dad, in the front room. 2 CONT In the meantime I saved my money for Uncle Karl to come here to 2 CONC the USA. He got here in the fall of 1923. He worked with me as ground 2 CONC man on the shovel for over a year. In the spring of 1926, he left for 2 CONC Detroit, Mich., and eventually got a job with Michigan Bell. 2 CONT Some time in 1924, I had a falling out with Rudolf and moved 2 CONC back into the city of Portland in a rooming house on Avon Place, just 2 CONC off Congress Street. Later that year I moved in with the Bartsch's as 2 CONC a roomer. Harry "Dad" built and addition to the flat. Added a kitchen, 2 CONC pantry and bathroom plus a back hall up and downstairs. I helped on 2 CONT the plumbing, painting and ceilings. 2 CONT When we got married, we lived there about two years. Then we 2 CONC bought the house on Bonnybank Terrace, sold it after three years and 2 CONC moved back with Dad. 2 CONT The big depression had started in 1929, work was getting scarce, 2 CONC Maine Sand & Gravel went through bankruptcy. Worked about one year 2 CONC with only part-time pay. This is the reason we had to sell the houseon 2 CONC Bonnybank Terrace. 2 CONT Dad talked about buying a farm if we came along, which he did at 2 CONC 86 Winn Road, Falmouth. 2 CONT In the fall of 1933 I went to work for Cook & Co. In Portland as 2 CONC shovel operator and mechanic. The pay was small, but I always worked 2 CONC anyway. In the fall of 1937, I fell off the roof of a steam shovel, 2 CONC while repairing it. I was laid up with a cracked pelvis for two 2 CONT months. Then in 1939 the first shipyard started and jobs were getting 2 CONC more plentiful. I asked for more pay, but didn't get it, so one Friday 2 CONC morning (payday) my pay envelope was no bigger, so I took my dinner 2 CONC bucket and walked of the job. I had a few crane and shovel jobs with 2 CONC Sullivan Construction Co., and Bridges Construction Co. In Gardnier. 2 CONC Then the West Shipyard was built, and I was recommended as a crane 2 CONC operator. I was hired on the spot in the morning, and went to work 2 CONC that afternoon on the second shift on Crane # three. That was in the 2 CONC spring of 1940. After about one year I was made lead man of 11 cranes. 2 CONC I worked there almost five years. Dad passed away in 1944. I had saved 2 CONC enough money by then to buy the farm in 1945 from "Grandma." In the 2 CONC meantime we 2 CONT started the poultry business, and remodeled the barn for hens. I had a 2 CONC chance to go to work for Bridges Construction Co. But declined because 2 CONC I wanted to go into the hen business. Which I did successfully over 2 CONC the next 20 years. 2 CONT In 1952 I was operated on a vertebra disk in my spine. It was 2 CONC very painful during the healing process and it left my right leg in a 2 CONC terrible condition, which bothers me now in my old age. In 1969 I had 2 CONC triple bypass operation at the Maine Medical Center. I slowly got over 2 CONC that too, but it took about six months. 2 CONT During the late 70's Jennie and I traveled quit a lot. We went to 2 CONC Hawaii, Germany, Chicago, Oklahoma City, Phoenix. We went to Seattle 2 CONC and drove Richard D's car back to Portland via Oregon, California, 2 CONC Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida and up the east coast to Maine 2 CONC about 5,000 miles. Just before Christmas 1980 Jennie was diagnosed 2 CONC with kidney trouble, which got slowly worse. I took care of her for 2 CONC almost five years. She passed away March 9, 1985. 2 CONT One more outstanding thing was our trip to Germany. The summer of 2 CONC 1977, Elizabeth, Annalese & Andreas came for a visit here. We made 2 CONC arrangements to travel back with them, via Air France. We flew from 2 CONC Boston to Paris, then to Frankfurt, and onto Berlin, where Horst was 2 CONC waiting for us. We spent several days in Spandau with Elizabeth. Then 2 CONC we went to spend some time with the K”cher's. Then we took a 6-day 2 CONC trip on the Rhine River from Amsterdam to Basel. The steamer stopped 2 CONC every might near a big city and during the day to take side trips for 2 CONC sightseeing. Most outstanding was Dome in Cologne and Heidelberg, 2 CONC where we had a Bratwurst Fest with Weis Beer. From Basel we took the 2 CONT train to Zurich, Switzerland, spent one day there and then by train to 2 CONC Munich, Germany. We spent two days there to explore the city. Then 2 CONC from Munich to Berlin by plane. The Kochers's showed us the city of 2 CONC Berlin. The Berlin Wall was still standing then, with no-mans land on 2 CONC the Russian side. Annelisse also took us for a trip by steamer on the 2 CONT River Spree, to dem Wamensee and the Peacock Island. Then came the day 2 CONC to say goodby. We had breakfast with the K”chers at six a.m.. Then 2 CONC boarded a plane at Templehof for Hamburg. There was a strike on by the 2 CONC flight attendants, was delayed four hours. Then on to London, where we 2 CONC had to hurry to catch our plane to Boston because of the delay. We had 2 CONC a nice smooth flight over the ocean. Richard picked us up in Boston 2 CONC for the trip to Falmouth arrived here about five p.m.. "Breakfast 2 CONC inBerlin-- Supper in Falmouth." Some difference from my first trip 2 CONC here! 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1952: I sponsored Rudy Casparius to come here to the USA. He saved 2 CONC his money to bring his wife, Renate, here. But we had to sponsor her, 2 CONC also. About a year after he got here, the Army drafted him. After boot 2 CONC training they sent him right back to Germany in the occupation Army, 2 CONC Renate followed him. But when he came back, we had to vouch for Renate 2 CONC again, before she could come back. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1926: Dad built a little Green house about 12' by 20' on Bonnybank 2 CONC Road Used it successfully. It was taken down when we moved to Falmouth 2 CONC and rebuilt on the west side of the main house. But after a few years 2 CONC it was taken down. 2 CONT 2 CONT September 17, 1967: 2 CONT That was the fateful day of our accident on the derailment of the 2 CONC Cog Tramway Train on MT Washington in New Hampshire. It seems we were 2 CONC destined to be on that train. First we were delayed ad home with 2 CONC electrical trouble. Then in Conway, NH, where we stopped for dinner it 2 CONC took a long while before we were served. When we got to the mountain, 2 CONC we got the last train going up. In leaving the top of the mountain the 2 CONC car was overloaded, because so many people stayed over from earlier 2 CONC trains and this was the last train back from the mountain. The 2 CONC accident happened only a little way from the top. It sure shook the 2 CONC two of us up very much. It seems that after a year our troubles 2 CONC started, Jennie with her kidney trouble and me with angina & heart 2 CONC trouble. 2 CONT 2 CONT 1930: Noble grand of Maine Lodge #1 I.O.O.F. 2 CONT 1950: president of Cumberland County Farm Bureau, Committeeman for the 2 CONC Farm & Home Administration. I was voted outstanding Poultry Man for 2 CONC 1950. I was Treasure of Falmouth Grange for 14 years. A 50-year member 2 CONC of the grange. 2 CONT A 66-year member of the I.O.O.F. 2 CONT 2 CONT "Grabbed Some Dirt-- 2 CONT I'm Still Here" 2 CONT Richard E Casparius, 62, a poultry farmer, and his wife, Jennie, 2 CONC 60, from Falmouth, Me, had tried twice previously to get on the Mt. 2 CONC Washington cog railway. They finally made it Sunday, but had to stand 2 CONC up front. He tells what happened: 2 CONT ---------- 2 CONT The train was descending and we had gone about 1000 feet down 2 CONC when the engine left the tracks. I could see the brakeman turning the 2 CONC wheels, but he wasn't able to stop the car. As the car left the 2 CONC tracks, I was thrown forward, and the impact threw out the front 2 CONC window. When I came to, I was about two feet in front of the car. It 2 CONC was on its side. I grabbed a handful of dirt and said to myself, 2 CONC "I'm still here." I tried to get up. I could see my wife's coat in 2 CONC the window that I had gone through. I lost my balance, so I crawled 2 CONC on my hands and knees to help her. I was only a few feet away. 2 CONT People were helping the injured, passing them out the window. I 2 CONC found my wife. Her coat had stopped her from flying through the 2 CONC window. It was very peaceful prior to the train leaving the tracks. 2 CONC And when it did only a few children cried. I got a cut on the top of 2 CONC my bald head, and had a few other cuts and bruises. It could have 2 CONC been worse. We went over where there was only an eight-foot drop. A 2 CONC little further down it would have been a 25 to 30-foot drop. 2 CONT People were taking their coats and covering the injured. We must 2 CONC have waited an hour before we were removed. I lost my glasses and 2 CONC can't drive home. My wife has a bruised hip and shoulder. 2 CONT 2 CONT "OVERCROWDED OR NOT?" 2 CONT Boston Globe 2 CONT Monday Morning Edition 2 CONT Sept. 18,1967 2 CONT MT. WASHINGTON, N.H.- Probers into Sunday's cog railway 2 CONC derailment that killed eight and injured 73 will have to settle the 2 CONC question of whether the car was overcrowded. 2 CONT N.H. His observation, however, is in direct conflict with 2 CONC statements by persons who experienced the tragic plunge. 2 CONT "The car was packed to the gills. I 3 CONT started out working there as a draftsman and worked up to a designer, 3 CONC and was 3 CONT working on a Computervision Cad/Cam system. I left GTE because they 3 CONC replaced 3 CONT the Computervision system with another Cad/Cam system and I refused to 3 CONC learn a 3 CONT new system. I thought (at the time) that Cadds was the best software 3 CONC around. So I 3 CONT left GTE to go to work for Computervision. After-all if Cadds was the 3 CONC best 3 CONT software around, then why not go work for the company that created it. 3 CONC 3 CONT I worked in Software support for Computervision Corp, a Cad/Cam 3 CONC software 3 CONT company. I worked there for 8 1/2 years in customer support. While 3 CONC working for 3 CONT Computervision I was afforded the opportunity to travel to Amsterdam 3 CONC to teach a 3 CONT training class for a week. It was a great trip and I even saw some 3 CONC windmills. I 3 CONT supported a product called "Cadds" and "Cadds5". At one point in time 3 CONC in the '80's, 3 CONT Cadds was the hottest Cad/Cam software on the market. After 8+ years 3 CONC at 3 CONT computervision I decieded it was time to move on. 3 CONT I currently work in Lexington at a company called Workgroup 3 CONC Technology. 3 CONT We have a software product called CMS that allows customers to keep 3 CONC track of the 3 CONT files they create in business. This is known as a "PDM" application 3 CONC using Oracle as 3 CONT a database to store files and information about these files, to allow 3 CONC workers to find 3 CONT documents, etc that they need to do their jobs. We are a small company 3 CONC with about 3 CONT 120 or so employees at the present time, but we are currently growing 3 CONC very rapidly. 3 CONT Our stock symbol is WKGP if you are interested in investing in a 3 CONC software 3 CONT company. If you looking for a position at a small software company, 3 CONC please fell free 3 CONT to contact me, as we are looking for help in all departments. Our 3 CONC software is doing 3 CONT well and we are expanding rapidly. 3 CONT 3 CONT Demographics 3 CONT When I got the job at GTE I was living in Salem Mass and moved many 3 CONC times 3 CONT since then. Lived a short time in Maine while working with my brother 3 CONC at a Dairy 3 CONT Queen. Then it was time to go back to work so I got my job back at GTE 3 CONC and 3 CONT moved back to Mass. 3 CONT We bought a house on Plum Island and lived there for about 5 years. 3 CONC In the 3 CONT spring and fall it was a wonderful place to live. However in the 3 CONC summer it was 3 CONT horrible place to live because of the tremendous amount of traffic. It 3 CONC was 3 CONT impossible to leave the island on a hot summer day to go to the store. 3 CONC The winters 3 CONT were long and cold out there and we spent many a night bundled up in 3 CONC front of the 3 CONT woodstove. We moved from there to Amesbury Mass where we lived for 3 CONC about 3 3 CONT years. After commuting from Amesbury to Bedford Mass I could not put 3 CONC up with 3 CONT the traffic any longer. So we bought a farm house in Tewksbury Mass as 3 CONC it was 3 CONT only about 10 miles (back roads) from Bedford. 3 CONT Personal 3 CONT 3 CONT I have been married for 25+ years and have 3 children. My wife 3 CONC Barbara has kept 3 CONT me on the straight and narrow all this time. Are 3 kids are ages 23, 3 CONC 20,18. The 3 CONT oldest, Todd is married to Traci and they are living in Lowell and 3 CONC have a son (our 3 CONT first grandson) named Anthony.. Matt is our second and he is currently 3 CONC a student at 3 CONT Green Mountain College, in Poultney, Vt. He is studying recreation and 3 CONC plans on 3 CONT working in the recreation field. . Our third child Sarah is currently 3 CONC a senior at Tewksbury Mass and plans on going into Early Childhood 3 CONC development. She will be spending this summer in Maine at a Girl Scout 3 CONC camp as a counselor. She is great with kids and loves to be aroundthem 3 CONC . My wife Barbara has done day care in our home since our own kids 3 CONC were first born. She also loves kids and is great with them. She is 3 CONC planning on going back into day care this fall. 3 CONT Interests 3 CONT My main interest in life, at this point in time anyway is 3 CONC computers. I work with 3 CONT computers all day and then I come home and work (play) on my computer 3 CONC at home 3 CONT all evening. Weekends are mostly the same especially in the winter 3 CONC months. I hate 3 CONT cold weather and have yet to figure out why we still live in this 3 CONC climate. Summers 3 CONT are taken up with computers and GOLF, my other passion in life. 3 CONC Someday I may 3 CONT even get good at it. I plan to retire and play golf every day. Big 3 CONC dreams! 3 CONT One of the places where I learned alot about creating web pages is at 3 CONC work. One of our 3 CONT products is a web-based application that allows our customers to 3 CONC design their own 3 CONT html interface to our product. I have spent the last 5-6 months 3 CONC creating web pages 3 CONT to learn how to support this product. I have learned a tremendous 3 CONC amount about 3 CONT creating web pages through this experience. There is so much more to 3 CONC learn and I 3 CONT hope that my page shows what I have learned. 3 CONT There are few interests in my life other than computers. I 3 CONC enjoy singing and 3 CONT music and am currently a member of a barbershop chorus "Sounds of 3 CONC Concord" 3 CONT from Concord Mass. I am currently not active in the chorus but plan to 3 CONC return at 3 CONT some point.. Barbershop music is my favorite music, with country music 3 CONC a close 3 CONT second.
